Solution for DOWRY!
India is well known for its rich culture. And through ages, we have evolved in different ways. One of them is this DOWRY system. Dowry was primarily a farewell gift, given out of the love. But what we have made out of this is absurd. These days dowry is demanded unethically, or say, it is snatched from the bride’s parents who shed their sweat and blood to marry their daughter. From ages, the marriage has been the union of two souls. But this union of souls has now turned into a trade. As soon as people get to know that they have given birth to a baby boy, they celebrate as their son is going to get loads of dowry when he marries. Many of the families give dowry in order to show their economic status to the world. But some are forcefully made to give it. When they fail to do so often the girl is punished and even she is thrown into death valley. So what should we do to prevent this? Well, even when we go to buy some device, we do enquire a lot about the products. Don’t we? I believe, we should do the same for the family where we are sending our daughter. Not just this, we ourselves need to stand against the dowry system. Since the talks about dowry are made before the marriage, we very well know which families are genuine and which ones are greedy. There is nothing wrong with gifting your daughter what you desire. But being burdened by our society’s norms, and the groom’s family, giving dowry is not acceptable. It’s true that people sometimes get threats from in-laws about the dowry and they get ready to pay the demanded money. but instead of that, we can directly give complaints to the police. They will be punished and others too get some lessons from such incidents. The boy should think that he is inviting a partner to share his life. She is equal to him in every way. Neither he has done any sacrifice nor she has. So where is the question of money her? Love her for her character not for her money. When people do understand such things then only this system can be removed from the roots. ———— ABOUT THE AUTHOR: This article is written by Vijayanand A J.
