What is the GM diet?
As per the internet, this diet was created for the employees of General Motors in 1985 to help employees stay fit and improve their overall quality of life. However, this has been denied by the Company and so its true origins remain unknown. The diet plan is broken into 7 days – each day the diet consists of eating only specific food groups.
Day 1: On the first day, you are supposed to eat only fruits. All fruits are allowed except for bananas. It advised not to starve at any point if you feel hungry. Consume fruits the whole day. Also, it is advised to consume atleast 8 to 12 glasses of water during the day.
Day 2: You can only eat vegetables in the raw or cooked form. Again, there is no limit on amount of vegetables, but potatoes should be restricted to breakfast only. Some healthy option suggestions would be tomatoes, beans, carrots, cucumbers, cabbage and lettuce. Don’t forget to consume atleast 8 to 12 glasses of water each day.
Day 3: This day consists of a mix of fruits and vegetables. However, there is a restriction on eating potatoes and bananas on this day. Day 3 will make you feel lighter and better as you gain a little amount of carbs from the vegetables and a good amount of fruit sugar from the fruits.
Day 4: The diet on this day is only bananas and milk. You can only eat up to 6 large or 8 small bananas and 3 glasses of milk (preferably skimmed). To provide some relief, cabbage soup is allowed.
Day 5: Today is the day you finally get to eat some meat – two 10-ounce portions of beef, chicken or fish. Other than this, you can only eat up to 6 tomatoes. Vegetables can replace meat with brown rice or cottage cheese. An increase of water intake by two glasses is recommended to flush out any extra uric acid.
Day 6: This day consists of the same diet as day 5 plus an unlimited amount of vegetables. Potatoes are not allowed
Day 7: On the last day, you can have any vegetables. There is no maximum amount and you can also eat up to 2 cups of brown rice. You also have an option of consuming sugarless fresh fruit juice.
Benefits of GM Diet:
The plan encourages one to increase intake of fruits and vegetables which are great for weight loss because of low calories. When you increase the consumption of fruits and non-starchy vegetables, you automatically lose weight. The diet also limits foods that may cause weight gain like sugary beverages, alcohol etc. Moreover, on most days there is no restriction on the amount of the fruit/vegetable. This ensures that the person is not left hungry.
Disadvantages of GM Diet:
- While not as restrictive as other diets, it still allows you to eat only a particular type of food on a day.
- There is no scientific or official research that has been conducted on this diet. At max, it can only be corroborated with individual experiences, which may vary from person to person.
- The diet restricts consumption of various food groups. If followed for long, this may result in malnourishment as every food group has nutrients to offer.
- The diet may give illusions of great results, but they are only temporary in nature. Weight gain will happen if you start having junk or alcohol after this diet. Of course, proper exercise plan if followed, can help you maintain this weight.
- Like a lot of other diets, it focuses on getting as skinny as possible without considering the health of the body which should be the main goal.
Should you try it?
Depends on your goal. If you wish to lose weight quickly for a special occasion and the temporary results don’t bother you, this is a comparatively hassle-free option. However, if your goal is to have a permanently healthy routine, this may not be such a great idea. Instead, try incorporating exercising and a less Mediterranean diet.
So yes, the diet does work for many and might help you in a time crunch. Let us know your reviews after the diet!
